The season of change

Here we are, six week's into the new semester and the fall season of change.

Sunday's New York times, 10.7.12, Art section, introduced a new exhibit in NYC ,of Picasso's unseen works.  28 paintings are from his collection, which have never been viewed.
The art critic's will have a field day, analyzing these works.  Stay tuned for the art world's reaction/comments.
Spent last Thursday viewing the Kennedy/Kent State photography exhibit at the WAM.
Highly recommend from a historical pespective to an appreciation of the imaging media.
Take time to view the visual presentations that are part of the exhibit.
I need to add, there were more students viewing the exhibit, than musuem visitors.
This was good thing!

Enjoy the colorful season that nature is providing for us.
See, Understand, Appreciate.
Thank you.

Fall 2012 Welcome to Fall CA 121

We are three week's into the Fall Semester, and we are beginning to experience the wonders of nature, as we experience the wonders of art in its comtemporary transition.

nytimes.com/design        a link that will bring you up to speed of what is happening in the art world of current globalization.

Look at Elizabeth Catlett ; the tattoo master,  Dr. Lakra; Art and Leisure for the Fall season, that includes all concepts of art.

Opening at the Worcester Art Museum, the end of September, collection of Photographs from the sixties.  A must addition to your 'to do list'.

One could spend all one's leisure/productive time, attempting to keep abreast what is happening , that surrounds our daily  lives. This would be ideal...but not practical....we have so many  items to accomplish.

A trend that is appearing in the cultural world...attendance is increasing at all cultural events.
This increase is not isolated to FREE admission; this increase is evident in  paid admission.

Is this trend due to the economy, the political climate.....Your thoughts are welcome.
My thoughts....this trend is an escape from the  reality of existing.  A good escape, but  one needs to appreciate what one is escaping to......and, is this increase in cultural activity  expanding one's  appreciative values?   A question to consider.

Looking forward to your postings.

Thank you.

Walmart now means ART!

Everyday low prices have made possible a new American Museum in Walmart’s home town of Benton, Arkansas. Sponsored and financed by Walmart family member Alice Walton. Without a long history of interest and appreciation of the arts, the Walmart family has provided the world with a new destination to go to (and is also enabling free admission). The next time you shop Walmart, think of the artistic value your shopping is contributing to. We have probably not seen such a major new museum since the opening of the new Getty Museum in California.

Visit the museum’s site:

There is a story in the Maine Antique Digest  about this Museum:

Addition at the Gardner Museum

Although contemporary art is not what comes to mind when we think of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Fenway Court) in Boston, they are much in the news this month with the opening of the addition to their building, designed by architect Renzo Piano. The Gardner Museum had restrictions about alterations to the building/collection, and this new addition is starkly different from the old building. An interesting counterpoint - much as this same architect did with the Morgan Library in NYC.

You can see the story of this new addition at:

http://www.buildingproject.gardnermuseum.org/design/new-building

And a WBUR story/slideshow at:

Can't wait to see it in person!

(Here is the courtyard, designed by Isabella Gardner to resemble a Venetian courtyard.)

A New Year Begins

To students following this blog, welcome (or welcome back)!

Over the holidays, I have neglected this activity, so I will be making a number of entries, just to catch up - both with current art world news, and a report from some museum visits during the holiday season.
